Ahh, my princess came through...

I was having trouble getting pictures to upload and she finally made it. I can't believe how big my Tee is getting. This year she wanted to be a princess. I can totally do princesses. Especially this one. It was really fun to put together and then to see her all dressed up. I let her pick out some fancy jewelry to wear with it and a fancy headband. She LOVED it.

For halloween our ward has a carnival that the youth put on. This always happens the wednesday before Halloween. So I got her costume finished up for her and she tried it on. You have got to love this little girl. She turned to me and said, "When we go trick-or-treating I am going to get cold. Can you make me a cloak to go with it?" How can you say no to a sweet question like that? Well, if the fabric hadn't been on sale it wouldn't have happened. I got right on her cloak and had it ready for her to wear at the school parade. I think she was pretty in love with her costume this year!

In preparations for the church carnival, Tee was actually at a friend's house and was able to get ready there. This friend's mother took the time to curl her hair (which I can never get to hold a curl) and made Tee feel like the most special princess around. I am so greatful to her. Except now Tee wants me to curl her hair often and I can't get it to hold. I am going to need lessons.

Halloween is over...

...so why am I posting about it? Well, because I have been very busy around here and not so good at keeping up with it. So here is my Halloween post. I know you have all been waiting for it.

This year was a pretty easy year for me. Partly my own doing (I was thinking a little this year). In talking with the kids about what they want to be for Halloween, Jay decided he wanted to be a pumpkin. Great idea!!! I already had one made from three years ago. I told him to get it out of the box and see if it still fit. Score! It did. I don't think it will do for next year though.

Ace wanted to be a musketeer. That is great too. I have one of those in the box too. Sadly, that one didn't fit anymore and a new version has to be made. Good thing I know how to shop sales. He picked red and blue and loved having the cape. He "flew" around my house. I know that isn't part of a musketeer, but he sure had fun. And his friend even got to play as well. The old cape fit him great!

Tee's costume will have to wait. I am having problems loading pictures.

A fun package

This week I recieved a fun package in the mail. A week or so ago I actually won an online blog giveaway. I couldn't believe it! I have never won something like that before. So I anxiously awaited the arrival of my package, all the way from Canada. Well, Canadian Thanksgiving and The United States Columbus Day made my package come awfully slow. The fun part of recieving this package was that I knew only of the pattern and DVD coming. All the rest were fun treats. Thank you Madame Samm! What a treat! This pattern will soon be used. I am so excited!

New Quilt for Jay

This post has been a long time in waiting. Mostly because the quilt has taken me at least a year to complete. Closer to two if you want to be honest. It all started with a piece of fabric that a friend passed on to me with these African animals on it. I really wasn't sure where to start. I mean it had squares with animals printed on it. Then it came to me. Highlight those animals in a quilt block. So I started cutting and sewing and pulled together the blocks. They hung on the wall for quite a while before I decided what to do next.

In the meantime, I had talked to Jay about these animals being his new blanket, in hopes that he would give up his baby blanket that had been washed and chewed to shreds. When I finally decided what to do next, I gave the stack of blocks to Jay and sent him to the living room floor and said to lay them out how he would want them to be for his quilt. The only rule I gave him was that no two animals that were alike could be next to each other.

He had a great time doing this and took his time. He actually put some thought into it. I mean, come on, he is only 7. So I took his layout and added sashing and made the blocks into a top. He was so excited that it was a finished quilt top and he wanted to sleep with it that night. I said no.

Some time passed and I took it to my quilt group to baste it. And then it sat in the sewing room some more. Then I machine quilted some of it. And then it sat in the sewing room again. Poor quilt just wanted to be loved. I finally got up the excitement to finish quilting it about a week ago. Jay was so excited that again he wanted to take it to bed with him. But the binding wasn't on it yet. Sorry buddy. So that night I got right on the binding and he got to have it the next day. The best part...he traded me, my quilt for his baby blanket. Hard to believe he actually gave up the baby blanket. I am just glad to have it finished. It feels so great to finish a project like that!

Just for fun I made this sweet dress for a nieces birthday. I hope she likes it. Tee was quite funny. She wanted to package it up but I told her she couldn't till I took some pictures of it. She took the pictures for me. I think there were 20 of just this dress. I had to laugh.

Today was a pretty good day in the sense that I got a lot done. Despite my headcold I spent time in the sewing room. My Work in Progress pile shrunk! I love that feeling.

Today I:

Ironed the ironing pile (and it was a pile)

Hemmed a pair of shorts

Fixed a shirt that needed repairing

Finished machine quilting a quilt

Now it doesn't look like I did that much but it sure feels good to have my table almost all cleaned off.

My small stack of fabric has turned into many little dresses. It was awfully fun too! I have such a great time sewing little dresses and only one girl to sew for. So when I knew that I could get things to some nieces without having to pay shipping, I jumped on it.

This peasant style dress is very cute and comes together very easy. I made one for my sweet Tee and had to make some more.

Tee got a matching one with a cousin. Except that I had to add a strip at the hem of Tee's because she is so darn tall. I am having to do that a lot lately. She doesn't get the match with anyone very often and she really loved it. I am so greatful to get the share other little girls in my life.This one was for a friend's birthday gift. Her little sister loves to play "dress up" and I just happened to be there when she tried on this dress. A few sizes too big for Emmy but just right for her sister.

Emmy also had to try on Tee's new skirt that I made her for school. Again a little too big but so cute and I can't get Tee to model this cute for me anyway.

These peasant dresses have an elastic neckline and sleeves with a ribbon bow at the the neck as well. The sizes are very forgiving if you get it a little too big. It ties in the back and the neck stretches. Can't get much better than that. They are great for using up the remnant pieces of fabric that I buy. You don't need very much of each color. I have now made 5 of these little dresses and I think that this color combination is my favorite. Although they are all VERY cute on each little one.

First off, I really haven't been in the sewing room a whole lot in the last couple of weeks. This is the time of year for canning and I have done my share to make sure we have our food storage for the year. It has been time well spent. So...here we are catching up on a few projects that I just haven't gotten around to sharing.

I had two new nieces born this summer and both needed blessing dresses. Sweet Abby's was requested to be a daisy dress just like the one I shared before. The other one was a little harder. Little Audra was intended to have a different dress but my plans changed...

Her dress began to form in my head. Then as I was trying to recreate it into fabric, it just wasn't coming together. Sometimes that happens to me. I hope I am not the only one. So two days before I needed to get it in the mail or it wouldn't be there, I scrapped the dress and started over. Call me crazy! I know I was thinking it. But this one came together and went in the mail.

A while ago I came across this white linen skirt at Goodwill. I fell in love with the sheer, embroidered hemline. Even though it was a size 4 (sorry...no longer fit into that size) I bought it anyway. This was the time to refashion it.

So here we have our before picture. (I don't do many "refashion" projects)

Since it was linen I decided to keep it simple. This fabric really didn't need much to make it pretty. I had a simple, short sleeve and added a daisy trim to the neckline.

The gathered skirt was already hemmed for me with the adorable embroidered hem. Gotta love that!

Summer is pretty much over because the kids are now in school and I get to tackle a stack of fabric like this most anytime of the day now. Strange feeling it is! Stay tuned. Some of it got done before school started.

If you don't know this already I love playing with my doll, Addy. Strange I know. I am a grown up and love any excuse to make something for a doll. This time is for a dear friend's daughter.

Ray has made the choice to be baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I am so proud of her and wanted to celebrate with her, even though she is so far away. She loves her doll just as I love mine and thought this might be something fun. Not spiritul or testimony building, but fun.

Her dress is made from my favorite white satin. I make everything out of it. I do stray very far from it. It is just a simple dress with a cap sleeve, gathered skirt and a netting overlay. I added a 1" satin ribbon to the hem of the netting. I really love that touch.

At the waist I also added the same 1" satin ribbon.

And of course, it has a velcro back. After all, what good is a little girls doll dress that she can't do up the back?

A Daisy Dress...

As I said, there are many dresses and outfits lately. Somehow, the babies seem to come in spurts. My second new niece was born on the 7th. From what I hear she is doing great. I better get on her dress.
So this dress was a special request from a cousin. She is a great friend of mine and I wish that we could live closer and spend more time together. But I guess the once in a while will have to do for now. It is a special dress that my husband's grandmother used to make for all of the granddaughters. She would sit and make each daisy individually and crochet each little daisy together. It really can be quite the project. We all know that as time passes, grandmother's get older and their dexterity may not be what is used to be. So Slyn called me and asked me to make it because Grandma just wasn't up to it. I promptly agreed. Thanks for letting me be a part of your special day.

Now, some details. It is made with yarn, obviously. I started with a yarn that I already had and thought that I had enough. I won't ever do that again. I ran out of it in the middle and when to find more...it is discontinued. So I took what I had left and found something that was almost the exact same. I sure lucked out on that one! As I said before, each daisy is made individually on a small wheel. I think that I counted approximately 130 or a few more to make this small of a dress. I am not even sure how well it fit. Slyn...you better let me know so that I can adjust for the future.
Each daisy is then crocheted together to form the body of the dress. The sleeves are made seperately and sewn on. The neckline is a simple chain stitch. When we lived in Idaho, close by my husband's grandmother, he requested that I learn how to make these special dresses. We hadn't been married long and he knew that I liked to be creative. I also know that as grandmother's age, sometimes these types of things can get lost. He also asked me to learn his favorite candy that Grandma makes...another post...
It dawned on me as I was making this sweet dress that these things are already starting to go by the wayside. And part of it is my fault. Yes, I am one of the only ones that has learned to make them and my own daughter didn't even know that I made one for her a a small baby. It is currently tucked away in a special box and hasn't been out since she was a baby. We have moved too many times and it just hasn't come out. I better work on that one.
This type of dress definately needs a slip. So I quickly made one to go under it. I wasn't super pleased with it. It just didn't come together like I wanted. Hopefully it was okay. I do love the lace that edged the hem. Thanks again for sharing in your special day. It was a really fun project. It was fun to relive the time that I spent with dear hubby's grandmother at her side.

Another baby outfit...this time a boy.

You would think that I have a baby in my house with all I have been working on for babies lately. I just had a new niece born early this morning. Her dress is coming soon.

This little tuxedo was made for my nephew that lives in Las Vegas. Dear Hubby and I got to visit him at about a month old. It was really fun! We left the kids home with Grandma and some friends and spent four days just the hubby and myself...and the new baby. The tuxedo is made from my favorite satin. It is from the Casa Collection at at JoAnns. What I love about it is that it is easy to work with...not too much sliding around (that happens with satin you know). I also love that it is 100% washable. Perfect for my sweet babies. Because you know that they are either going to spit up on it or something else and will require washing.

I used a different satin for the stripe down the leg and the vest. I just love how these little outfits turn out. Although this one was a bit large for the little man. It is just so hard to estimate their size when you get started long before they are born.

And you can't have a tuxedo without a bow tie.

This time I made a long tailed jacket to go with it. I have only done this once before. Before another gets made my pattern is going to get a little tweeking. It turned out fine but just not what I was thinking.

Las Vegas Baby Girl

Not too long ago I had a "need" to make a blessing dress. I had to go in search of a baby girl to make this special dress for. And that little girl got her dress. Now, just a few months later, I have three baby girls to make dresses for. I am loving every minute of it and every one is just a bit different from others I have made.

This first dress was made for a friend of my sister-in-law. I have made a dress like this before and she fell in love with the mental picture that my sister-in-law gave her. So another dress was born. It has a simple bodice with a cap sleeve and no collar. It buttons up the back and made from my favorite satin. This satin happens to be my favorite because I can always find it on sale and it is totally washable. You know, just in case that sweet baby spits up on it or has a diaper accident.

I was pretty much finished and the dress just needed something more so I added a satin ribbon at the waist with a bow and a touch of pink.

The skirt has two layers of tulle layered over it with silk rose petals enclosed. They are free moving and add just that nice look for a complete dress. Love it! Thanks for the baby girl to sew for.

Two more dresses will be coming soon. I have two more nieces on the way.

Baby Gift

Okay, I know, I know...I forgot to turn the pictures before I posted them and now that they are uploaded I don't want to start over. So here goes anyway, just turn your head a little. :)

I really have been busy as of late but not much in the sewing room. I am a little sad about it. But my dear hubby and I got to take a much needed getaway to Las Vegas. It was so much fun and the time together was needed and wonderful. We forget and get caught up in the day to day and kids that we are important too.

So a couple weeks ago was a baby shower for one of my husband's cousins. I decided to make her a hooded towel. I received one for my first baby and LOVED it. True it is a little large for a newborn but she will love it just the same and use it for years and years.

My dear sweet Ace was such a good sport to model a purple towel for me. He really did a great job and I don't plan on using these pictures for blackmail in the future. Although it could happen.

The towel is made from a purchased bath towel and hand towel. I used my daughter's towel as an example and cut the hand towel in half, shaped the hood and sewed it on. Love a quick gift! Pair it with some baby soap and lotion, great gift (at least I would love something like that)!

I am hoping that this will work. I am now on my regular computer and planning that this will work just like it always does. I try to do something every year for teacher appriciation week. Our teachers put so much time into our children and are underpaid and overworked. So this year I was contemplating our gift to them and it just started to esclate and became a large gift. Not exactly as I had planned but really wonderful in the end. So I had planned to make a loaf of fresh bread for each of them. But you can't just hand them a loaf of bread so I put a jar of jam with it. But once you put the jam with it you have to put it in something to keep it all together. Do you see how is escalated? So I remembered this bread basket set that I had made a while ago...there was two of them. How lucky was that? I finished them up, gave each season's cloth a quick ironing and put it all together.

This quick and fun skirt was put together in an evening for a sweet 5 year old's birthday party. She is such a girly girl that it was just perfect for her.

Another birthday gift perfect for the birthday boy. And totally by accident. I had gone into the sewing room looking for something cute for a pillowcase (and something that I had enough of). This one jumped out at me and it turned out perfect. We got to the party and his cake was a volcano with dinosaurs surrounding it. Great job, Taylor!

A quick recap of some small (but really fun) projects...

Maybe I am the only one that feels this way...but I love a quick project. One that you can cut out and finish in a couple hours or even a few minutes. I have been really working on some big things lately and needed a few quick ones to rekindle the love. Strange? Maybe!

One thing that I love about having a fabric stash and the ability to sew is that often my children have unique and free gifts to take to birthday parties. These recent birthdays were no exception. Often my kiddos get invited to parties on a Sunday afternoon. Sadly they don't get to attend because we generally don't do parties on Sundays. These ones...we were able to attend. Love It!

This skirt actually has a sister. I was cutting it out and had enough fabric for two, so here they come. One went to a birthday girl and the other went to my lovely niece that developed a very sweet love for Aunt Jen this weekend. Both are girly girls and love dresses and skirts. Can't get much better than that!

So the eye candy will have to wait. I don't know how to blog on the new laptop of mine. I did get this one picture and hopefully it will stay. All the others disappeared, twice. Let's try.

I am not going to try to move it. A sweet dress for another 18 inch doll such as American Girl dolls and Madame Alexander dolls. Google them if you want. They are great! I love to sew for these sweet dolls they are just like my little girls that live on my shelf and watch me sew. Again...strange? Yes! Just wait. The etsy shop is coming. I just haven't set it up yet.

WIP

They are just taking longer than normal due to some major back aches which turn into major headaches and so on...

Playing with dolls

Maybe you know this already but I love to play with dolls...18 inch dolls to be exact. Such as American Girl dolls and Madame Alexander dolls. Those kind. They are so much fun to sew for. So I dear friend called me after we saw her at Christmas time and made a suggestion. Why don't you sell those? So I decided to give it a go. We'll see what happens. I don't have anything planned except this adorable knit dress (actually there is 4 of them). The picture just doesn't do it justice. Molly (my model) is standing on my sewing table and I just can't help but look at her. She is very cute! Each dress is closed in the back with a strip of velcro...wonderful for little fingers to play independently. Love that!

So if your favorite little girl needs a spring dress for their doll...please contact me. I am still working on details.

Sick Kids = No Sewing

Oh what a wonderful day! Okay, just kidding. This week I had grand and fun plans (it is spring break...isn't that what you are supposed to do?)...that all went down the drain. It started Monday evening with a child with a fever. Then after canceling my day on Tuesday, dear sweet hubby came home 20 minutes after leaving for work saying that the clutch in his pickup went out and he needed my car. Well, in a way sick kids was a blessing. I had already arranged that I didn't have to go anywhere. But here it is Friday night, kids are getting better and still functioning with one car (there are worse things...I shouldn't be complaining). So, most mothers know this already...sick kids=not much sewing time.

So today I share a dress that I had the pleasure of making a few weeks ago. I have had a craving to make a blessing dress for a while. All my sister-in-laws were having boys and all of my local friends were also having boys. I really was praying for a girl for someone. When I found out that a friend from high school was having a girl I promply adopted her. And I am very pleased with how it turned out. I had it finished and hanging in the sewing room for a few days before packaging it up, just because I liked looking at it.I asked my friend for some direction about what she leans more toward (is she a frilly kind of mom or more simple and elegant, that kind of stuff). I bought this piece of fabric that I fell in love with a while ago and so we decided that I would use this piece and surprise her. Like I said, I am still very pleased with how it turned out.

I started with this sheer, embroidered overlay (the piece I loved). I was trying to figure out how I was going to put it together to create this dress. It had a beautiful scalloped edge that I was leaning toward using but it just didn't seem right. So I went with a wide satin band at the hem. I really love it more than the scalloped edge! The skirt is gathered and lined, due to the sheer overlay.

For the bodice I chose these sweet puffy sleeves with a sleeve band and a very simple bodice. I had it plain at first and it just wasn't right. Am I strange that my work just doesn't feel right? So anyway I went in search for something to add as the finishing touches. These simple, sweet flowers were just right. They match the embroidery on the skirt and everything. I think it was meant to be. I just love how it all turned out. Now the sweet little lady is six weeks old and adorable!

Now, just because I am strange...and I like simple things in life. I want to share my newest addition to the sewing room. A thread rack!!! You have no idea how exciting this is. I found it on the damaged shelf at JoAnns. It had one peg missing and one had broken. I really didn't have a problem with that...I have a handy hubby. I paid no more than $2.50 for a $15.00 rack. Love that! And my dear sweet hubby fixed the two broken pegs and hung it on my oh so bare wall. Thanks hubby, I love you!

More Blocks

I am pretty well keeping up with the pace of the quilt along. I am a block behind but if I get some uninturrupted sewing time I could catch up pretty quick I think.

This particular block was very hard for me and I really don't like it. Okay the block itself is fine but putting it together didn't work out so well. In making it I missed a very important step...trim the half-square triangle squares to a certain size. In missing that step my block pieces didn't fit together and it just didn't work out so well.
This one is just fine. I wish I had picked some fabrics with a little more contrast of color.

Block a Palooza continued...

I am very excited to write this post today. My camera went on a vacation with the husband and accidentally got left there. But that didn't stop me from continuing on with my blocks...just no pictures were taken and posted. So here we go...

I have been learning alot along the way and I have really appriciated that. This block (above) in particular I am having trouble with. The colors I chose just don't really work and they make the block different from the original example. For future reference, putting colors together for quilts is different than putting color together for clothing. I am not very good at the quilt part.

Another thing that I have learned is that as a beginner quilter, working with stripes probably was not a good idea. I am funny about how I want my stripes to go and sometimes I just couldn't make it work.

Again...color and contrast...need some help.

I do love this one.

This one was a nice easy change from the last more complicated block.

Applique was a new one for me as well. Like I said...a learning project.

And last so far...I actually skipped a block and moved on to this one. I am having trouble with my colors and stripes on the block I skipped. So I currently have two blocks to do before being caught up with the quilt along. The newest block was just posted today. I am very excited about the new block...just got to make the colors and stripes work. Challenging...

Block a palooza

So, call me crazy (but I think lots of people do that already), I decided to join in on a quilt-along over at Quilt Dad. I am very excited about it. I decided that I needed to use some of my stash. True, I had to buy the green piece to make it fully work, but I think I am doing pretty good. This is the first of 16 original blocks that will be made over the next 8 weeks. 2 blocks a week. I was pretty pleased at how this one turned out. I have never done flying geese (the triangle blocks) before and that was fun. I only cut off one tip of a triangle. I almost took it out and tried again. Then decided that my first block could have a minor mistake. : ) This second block was a little different. Each of these little squares started at 2 inches...that means a LOT of little squares. I didn't appreciate that so much. But I do like the overall look.

Christmas Happenings...

My world has been very full lately. After I finally felt better after my back injury, I got back on track with my Christmas projects, and added a few others in there too. For future reference...don't stand under basketball hoops while trying to move them. They will always win!

My dear sweet husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I think that question gets asked a lot. Normally I really don't want much. Maybe a new pair of pants to replace the ones I wore a hole in the knee (don't ask...I have kids). Or a new sweater to replace the one that I am still wearing from high school. Nothing big or exciting, and usually very practical. This year was a little different (at least in my mind). I really wanted shelves for my sewing room. And here they are. I am SO excited about them. I haven't had time to organize anything yet but it will come. Trust me! Merry Christmas to me!

My sewing projects this year consisted of 11 pairs of pajamas plus matching ones for 7 dolls. Well, due to my wonderful back injury, only 2 of those dolls got jammies (so far). There were 6 pairs of pants and 5 nightgowns. And from what I hear...all the kiddos like them. That is good news. Very fun for me to do.

But when you go to the fabric store and buy 3 bolts of fabric...you get a few strange looks. And yes, I walked out of the store with three entire BOLTS of fabric. It is okay though...the ladies at the fabric store know me and have made comments about watching my kids grow up. Sad huh?

This project I have been very excited to finish. One of my goals for the year is to be better at making a phone call or sending a card for birthdays in the family. Now you must know that with my family and my husbands family that adds up to over 50 birthdays to keep track of. That doesn't include grandmas and grandpas or aunts and uncles...just parents, siblings, their spouses and their children. My relief society did this board as a super saturday project and I was anxious to do one. It only came with ten little dots for people though...Problem! So I did what I could and here it is. I now have more of our family on there but still not everyone. I bought out the store's supply. So my dots will grow and hopefully I won't forget anyone this year!

Christmas Gifts

A couple of my nieces this year got pretty lucky. I was having so much fun sewing for their dolls that I may have gone a little over board. And thanks to Molly, Addy and Sydney, we have a nice little fashion show for you.Molly is ready for bed. This flannel nightgown matches the little girl nightgown that went to one of my nieces.

Sydney, Molly and Addy are sharing with us their new swim suits.
Molly is set to go trick or treating. Her pumpkin is made of fleece with a knit turtle neck and pants underneath to keep her warm.

This box-pleated jumper is 100% wool with a black knit turtle neck underneath. She is also modeling a fleece hat and scarf.

Sydney is showing us her flannel pants with a fleece sweater. You can't see it but it also has a kangaroo type pocket on the front.

Molly is ready for a play date a the park, but not till summer.

Molly and Addy are set to go the the holiday party.

Call me crazy, but I still love to play with dolls. I bet you would never have guessed that. I was so excited to package these up and send them to the lucky little ladies. Hope they enjoy them as much as I did.

Cute Cute Noelle Quilt

As with every quilt that I make, this cutie has a story. This one a little more of a story than some others. It all started with my quilt group. Where else would it start? This particular quilt was put together using a non-bonded batting. That means that the batting will come apart after using it and then you get little bits of batting spread out in globs. I'm sure you have had a quilt like that before. So when you have non-bonded batting the quilting needs to be closer together than if it is bonded batting. With this in mind, I brought the quilt home, ready to machine quilt it.
Then my sister-in-law got really sick and we needed to make the 12-14 hour (depending on conditions of children) drive to Salt Lake City, Utah. Quite honestly, I don't do well just sitting around. I like to have something to do. So I grabbed this quilt, my needle and thread and decided to hand quilt it. I had a few hours to kill.

I didn't work on it much on the drive there because we left late enough in the evening that it grew dark rather quickly. So during the next week, while we were there, I had some time to work on it some more. Then we packed up and come home. My quilt still unfinished by the time we returned home.We got home, school started and life began again. My quilt sat in the closet waiting for me to stop and enjoy it again. That time shortly came when my sister-in-law took a turn for the worse and passed away. We again made the venture to Salt Lake City, with a few hours to kill. I kept at it, this trip was a little more hectic and we came home again with the quilt, still unfinished.

This sweet little one was finally finished this last week. I had a back injury that left me completely down for a week and a half. My that was sure boring. I don't do well with that. But I have a great support system, husband and friends! I love them all! Thanks to them, we made it. And my quilt it finally finished, all done by hand. I don't know how many I will do by hand. They require a lot of sitting around.

One of my other sister-in-laws nicknamed this one the "Noelle" quilt. I think I agree. Too bad another sister-in-law (yes keep counting, there is 6 sisters on my husbands side) is having a boy.

Quilts...quilts and more quilts

In the mix of all that has been happening I have been getting together with a small group of women to quilt. We sure have a great time and have become good friends. Some laugh at me...mostly the husbands of the other ladies. You see, most of these women are in their sixties and seventies. I don't really know how old they are but you get the idea. And then there is me, in my late twenties, hanging out with these older women and having a great time.

It is interesting what brings a goup of people together. We all like to quilt and we have a common goal. To provide quilts to people in the community that may be in need. I don't think there is a better way to build friendships than by serving together. I don't accomplish nearly as many quilts as these other ladies do but here are a few that I have been able to do. I must say that I have learned a lot from these women!

This quilt was a one panel piece of fabric that I was able to machine quilt and bind. I have now learned how to actually machine quilt a quilt. I never really knew you could do that and now I am doing it myself. It is a small baby/lap size.

This quilt I was able to piece from some left over blocks from a different project. That was pretty fun for me to be able to use something that I had already started. It too is machine quilted. My second or third attempt at free motion quilting. I think I may have the hand of it. Although it definatey takes longer than straight line quilting with my walking foot!

This quilt is actually Ace's quilt. One of me friends gave him this animal/creation fabric and told him that I needed to make him a new quilt. So I found something to go with it and he loves it. I asked him if he wanted free motion or straight line quilting and he asked, "Which one is faster?" So that is what we did...straight lines. Doesn't hurt my feelings.

Ace is also our helper. Since the other kids are at school and I am the only young mom that attends, he gets all the attention. He is definately our little quilter in training. Thanks, Ace.

Baptism Dress

I have been a busy mama lately. Sometime this summer I...

moved,

went to 2 family reunions,

went to Salt Lake City, twice,

and made two dresses for a darling little girl to get baptized in.

I am not really sure how it all fit in. Oh...that is why my head isn't really on straight.

A sweet little girl needed a pretty white bracelet to go with her new princess dress.
Many, many beads were used on her dress. Two and a half packages to be exact...probably several hundred. (The lining peeked out in this picture. The hem ends with the line of beads.)

The neckline had to match the hem.

I couldn't turn this picture so forgive me and turn your head instead. The back laces up and she loved it. It helped with the fit also. All summer I have been thinking about this dress and I sat Miss T at the computer and have her take a look at some dresses online. Mostly to get an idea of what she liked and not. I have a bad habit of making her what I think is pretty and not what she likes. So I don't think that this is fully what she wanted, but she loved it in the end and it is exactly what I pictured in my head. I love that. Not always things come out of my head the way I picture them.

The inspiration came from this dress. And I sure enjoyed every step of the way. Stay tuned for the other dress. I still need to take pictures of it.

Recent Wedding

Before we moved I had the opportunity to work on a wedding. These three darling girls received matching flower girl dresses. Their grandma knitted them matching sweaters. The oldest has an American Girl doll (an 18" doll-my favorite to make clothes for) who received a matching dress as well. They were darling!

New Ties

I took a few minutes from my crazy wedding work to make new ties for my boys. They turned out great, were easy to do and the boys were proud to wear them.

Among everything else I have to do, I took the time to do something just for fun. I know you are thinking...fun? I have had this fabric and pattern picked out since my dear Tee was a toddler. I just never had the chance to get to it. At that time I had her, a baby and was pregnant with the third baby. And I wonder why I didn't get to it. So I finally have it finished and I am quite sad that I didn't get to it when Tee was little. But now my neice gets to enjoy it and spin in circles like little girls do in fun dresses.

This is a simple dress with a peter pan collar.

The pinafore had pin tucks on the bodice and the hem.

Cute puffy sleeves with an arm band.

The pinafore is the same front and back (the back doesn't have the pin tucks) and it ties in a bow on both sides.

I really enjoyed making this and would have loved to see my dear Tee in it. Maybe next time. Now she gets other fun and fancy things. Coming up in the fall is her baptism dress. She is very excited about that one, as am I.

I have finally got my camera out...

I have finally taken some long overdue pictures of recent projects to share. And I have been busy! I am very excited to share that my quilt along top is finally complete. The quilt, not yet. But the top is finished! I am very pleased with how it turned out. Despite the hiccups along the way.

I have given my sister the privilege of finishing it for me. I hope she enjoys is as much as I did and doesn't worry too much.

I did a doll quilt for miss Tee for Christmas to go along with her new jammies. I love having scraps around from things like that to work with. It was very fun for me. I don't know how much she really appriciated it but I had fun. Isn't that the whole idea?

This happened to be a really fun project for me. I am in the leadership for the children at church and as a presidency we decided to do something special for the children that are choosing to get baptized this year. We put together a personalized scripture bag for them with things helping them understand what being baptized is all about. A friend helped with the embroidery and I put the bags together. All 11 of them. Yes, there are 11 eight year olds in our ward.

Each bag is made from a lightweight denim and accented in their favorite color. I laughed a little when out of 11 kids there were only 3 favorite colors. I was pretty sad to realize that I forgot my camera to take a picture of all of them together. What a fun project!

I was able to find some straping that I attached a colored ribbon to accent the bags. Very cute! The colors chosen were pink, red and blue. They all turned out great and loved by the children! Congrats to these sweet spirits!

The DIY Dish

They are having a sewing machine/embroidery machine giveaway and I really want to win. Okay, with over 3000 entries I highly doubt I will. But, it doesn't hurt to try. Some of the Holidays

The holidays were really hard on me this year. Usually they are very busy but this year we added a funeral and a wedding to the mix. Both involving trips elsewhere. I am greatful they are over and things have settled down. I even have rekindled my relationship with my sewing machine...I am happy to report that it still likes me. So even with the craziness of the month I got a few things accomplished. I finished working on my "sea" of fabric only to create a "sea" of jammies.

It was very fun to do this for my sister. If you look closely you can find...(it is like my very own "I Spy" game) one little boy jammie pants, five little girl nightgowns and two doll nightgowns. Because your doll has to match too. If you didn't know that, you may not have a little girl around.

The nightgowns fit an 18" doll such as the American Girl dolls.

And since I was making jammies, my kids got matching ones too. 9 total...6 girls, three boys and three dolls. I am already planning next year.

Tee and Jay wanted to give pillowcases to their cousins (the cousins draw names on this side of the family) and these are what they picked out. It is pretty fun to take your kids to the fabric store (call me crazy I know) and let them pick out what they want and what matches it. They really have a good eye.

This is really our first year with teachers and I think they are great. Our teachers do so much for our kiddos and have such a hard job! With the news of the funeral we took the kids out of school the week before Christmas in addition to their winter break. I thought I had that whole week to finish up gifts and get the teachers something special. This was a quick gift that I put together for our teachers. Cute, cute reindeer made from a bottle of sparkling cider and brown fleece. I hope it made our teachers feel special and help them know that they are appriciated.

I am back to the creating game...I am not so sure about the computer game. I will keep the camera handy!

Halloween came and went, Thanksgiving came and went and now Christmas is almost here. I am not ready yet...just hold on! I think many of us feel that way. So I am just now getting to my Halloween costumes and the pictures that went with them. My dear Tee wanted to be a mermaid. I wasn't real thrilled about it but worked it out and here is the final product.

Each sequin was sewn on individually. It was a good think that I was sick at the time. I had an awful lot of down time to sit and hand-sew sequins.

She made a lovely mermaid.

My Jay wanted to be a pumpkin this year and it was one of the most fun costumes that I have made yet. Easy and adorable!

My oh my, where has the time gone? My world has been everything except sewing and crafting. Since Halloween I don't think I have made anything significant at all. Just wait...my world has been a sea of this:

Things to share and a sneek peek...

Where has the time gone? With the start of school and the end of summer and canning, my creative side has been put aside for a while. But...to no avail has returned. It started with a birthday gift for Tee's best friend.

Last fall Tee accidentally left her poncho at Jay's house and Jay fell in love with it. So I couldn't resist making a perfect gift for a great little girl. The best part was all but the trim and zipper were from my stash, making it a very inexpensive gift.

It is made from purple and black fleece with a cute pink and purple trim. It is hard to see but it has a hole for the hands to slip out and into the pockets.

The trim ended up pink and purple due to the fabric store not having the right shade of purple. I think it ended up okay. For such a simple (no sleeves, no legs, ect.) poncho it turned out very cute and loved by a special little girl. We hope you love it Jay.

Then there is another special little girl in our lives that had a birthday and chose to be baptized. That included a special dress for the occasion. She picked one out that she liked and the finished product is pretty close to the original. It is made from white gauze fabric and completely lined with broadcloth. I must say that this gauze fabric is very forgiving when mistakes are made. It is very hard to pick out but also very forgiving.

I think the biggest challenge with this particular dress was the sleeves. With them not being a set-in sleeve or with an open underarm it created some constructing techniques that I don't use very often. It was a learning experience and I was very happy to do it. It did end up a little big. I guess that is what happens when she lives 800 miles away.

Every little girl's special dress should have a matching one for their favorite doll. This one is slightly different than May's actual dress, but very close and perfectly modeled by Addy.

Way Cute Scripture Bag

My Tee has a great primary teacher that really encourages the kids to bring their scriptures to church. In our house the kids have a scripture bag that they share. It began to create a problem when Tee takes it to church and the boys want to too. So the problem is now fixed. Tee had a brithday this week and her gift? A cute, custom scripture bag. And so far she loves it.

It is made from a dark blue denim and accented with a dusty pink. I hand emroidered her name on it. The top flap has a small pocket with a zipper, perfect for pencils or other small items. It is held closed by the clips on the bottom. Around the front and back edges is pink piping.

On the top we have a handle made from backpack type straps, reinforced with a denim hand hold. The pink squares reinforce the handle and add just enough cuteness.

The top flap is lined with the contrasting pink. For now it is a little big but soon she will be getting a quad and it will fit perfectly. Hopefully it will be great for quite a few years (you know how their opinions change as they get older).

New Aprons

I have been very busy the last couple of weeks...but not at my sewing machine. In my kitchen, canning the wonderful harvest of the season. I really love this time of year when there is so much out there that is fresh. I do have a couple of small projects that I want to share. Inspired by a friend of mine, I decided that all the kids needed new aprons. They were so simple, the kids love them, and all created from my stash. That makes me happy! I got a new one too. But who is going to take MY picture?

Look, it is reversible!

They all are reversible with the pocket fabric on the other side, with a pocket of this main fabric on the other side. They actually look for reasons to wear their aprons...mostly wanting to help me in the kitchen. I can only take some much of that sometimes.

I also finished a shirt for Tee. A while back I found a woman that was making little girls dresses from a man's dress shirt. Tee is a little bigger than that, so hers is a long shirt. And she loves it! I found it a Goodwill. Really a great find! It is kind of hard to see (I may need to start hiring a photographer. I really am not that great at this!) but down the front is the buttons (sewn shut actually) and gathered at the neck and sleeve with elastic. She was very excited to find it in her drawer one morning.

Well, time has passed and lots of things have been made. First of all I am so excited to say that my quilt project is no longer on hold and is ready to be put all together. But more of that in a minute.

Some of my time lately has been spent preparing for the upcoming Kindermusik semester. My kids have been taking Kindermusik classes (basic music, learning to love and appriciate music, ect) from a wonderful woman in the area. She mentioned one day that it would be great to have a bag to store the kids instruments in. So I went home a made one for the four kids in Tee's class. The teacher loved them, so I made some more. The semester is about to start and I wanted to have some on hand for the new kids starting their classes. They are a simple corduroy bag with a drawstring and they work wonderfully with the kid's glokenspiels.

The next project has been a new apron for Tee. She has been making many cinnamon rolls lately with only one apron around. That means that in between batches I have to make sure to get her apron washed. I thought forget this, I will just make another one so that she can switch. I am really happy with how this one turned out too.

She loves it, which makes it even better.

I think the ric rac around the edge and the ruffle at the hem really make the apron cute and girly. We all know that Tee is very girly!

It, of course, ties in the back.

And now to my quilt that has been hanging on in the back for quite some time now. Partly because of all these other things I have been working on and mostly because I ran out of the blue and white fabrics. So being stuck at 62 finished blocks and needing 70, I had to decide what to do next.

This is what I decided. With the motto...use what you have before you buy more...I came up with these fun yellow and red squares. I really love them. There is only 8 of them and they will be spread out randomly among my more subtle blue and white blocks.

I think it will be okay. Stay tuned to see the finished product. Okay at least the finished top will be soon. The whole quilt might take me a while. We will see. School starts in a week or so. That will change my life dramatically.

Weddings...

My life has consisted of quite a lot in the last few weeks and I am ready for it to settle down. Will that happen? Probably not. So, most of my creating has been placed on hold due to the fresh fruits and vegetables of the season. They have kept me in my kitchen making sure that we have food on our shelves, for a rainy day. Those rainy days come in many ways and I am sure grateful for the storage that we have, even when stored in odd places around our home. Anyway, on to the fun stuff...

One of the young women in my ward was married this last week and she asked her cousin to make two of the bridesmaid's dresses. She called me and asked if I would help her along with the project. It was quite a project. With one bridesmaid living 800 miles away and the other being herself, it makes it kind of hard to fit them just right. She did a great job despite all the struggles and they both were beautiful!

Also pictured here is my skirt I did to wear to my sister-in-laws wedding. I don't make a whole lot for me now days (my kids are way more fun to sew for) and this turned out really well. I have loved it. It is a chiffon skirt with flounce and fully lined.

This red dress was a very fun project for me! This mother of the bride (same wedding as the bridesmaid's above) came to me with the problem of not being able to find anything red that she liked but found this yellow dress that she liked. So with picture in hand, a pattern with just the basic shape of the dress and beautiful red fabric I made the dress of her dreams. It fits just right and turned out better than I ever imagined.

Quilt along update

If you haven't noticed on my side bar on the right...I am a little excited about this quilt along project. It has already been a lot of fun. So the day I decided to join in on the fun, I went to my stash and found these two fabrics sitting right next to each other. They just screamed, "Make us into a quilt." Okay, I know fabric doesn't really talk, so don't add too much craziness to what you already think of me. I am not sure it will be enough so I will have to search some more to supplement. My fabric went into the wash that night so it would be ready the next day.

For Christmas last year I was given a new rotary cutter by my dear hubby. I told him at the time that I would have to make a quilt. So now 7 months later I pull it out of the packaging and cut my fabric into strips.

I really couldn't wait to do just one block a day like the quilt along. I sewed three strips and ended up with 8 finished blocks the second day.

The second day was so much fun that the third day was spent sewing more strips and cutting them up to make blocks, for a grand total of 36 finished blocks on day four. I think I am having too much fun!

In making these jammies for Tee, I chose to use Simplicity's pattern number 4767. I was really pleased with how it turned out. I made a few alterations to make it very simple that ANYONE could make these. The first is that I used the short sleeves and used the hem as a casing for the elastic, instead of hemming and creating another casing. I left off the ruffle at the bottom. One thing to note is that you might want to go a size or two too big due to the chest fitting pretty snug. Not tight but snug enough that it is hard to get in and out of.

Give them a try. They are easy and Tee loves them!

Wedding Fun

This last weekend my sister-in-law was married and the creative side to me said, "What better excuse to make a new dress for Tee (my 6 year old daughter)?" Well the dress evolved from just a dress to matching ties for her brothers (they can't clash with the wedding party - didn't you know?) and a new skirt for me. At the last minute I decided to add my husband in the mix. If everyone matches he should too, right? Well, he got left out because I was 6 inches short on fabric. Can you get more handsome boys? I think I was blessed. I was really impressed with these two guys. They have only worn clip on ties before so I was kind of worried that maybe they would throw one of their fits over this new tie. Well they didn't and they looked so handsome. They even thought they were pretty cool.

Somehow in my mix of pictures I didn't get a very good one of Tee's dress. So here is the best one I have and soon will get others that show better detail. Tee went to the fabric store with me and picked out a pattern, showed me all the alterations she wanted on it (yes, is it sad that a 6 year old knows what alterations can be done on a pattern to make it what she wants) and picked out her fabric. The only thing different from what she wanted is that she asked for it to be floor length. I made the executive decision not to due to that fact that the wedding was in Las Vegas in the middle of July. If you don't quite know what I mean, we will just say that the weather was up in the 115 range.

Tee's dress turned out beautifully. She chose elbow length sleeves with a flounce on the hem. I added silver beads to the princess lines, waistline, and sleeve. She chose my favorite type of satin to work with. It also has a netted slip underneath to help it "poof." What little girl doesn't like her dress to "poof?"

I was also able to alter the flower girl dresses to help them show a little more color. That was pretty fun too.

...And after. With these dresses the lining was the right green and the overlay didn't let enough of it show so I cut off the hem of the overlay and pulled up the hem at the hip to allow for more color to show. These two little girls were very cute walking down the aisle.

Girly Jammies

My sewing machine has recently been beckoning to me, so my computer has waited - ever so patiently for pictures of me newest creations.

On the top of my list of favorite things to make is dresses for 18" dolls such as the American Girl doll. Tee has a knock off doll and I love to sew for it. Silly I know. So when Tee gets something new, alot of times so does her doll. It makes it more fun! On our recent trip to visit family Tee and one of her cousins had so much fun together playing, dressing alike and all the fun things little girls love. So her mom and I made matching jammies for the girlys. It just so happened that we had enough left over for their dolls too.

Way too much fun, if you ask me!

Quilt Along

9 Year Old Quilt...Finally Finished

I am SO thrilled to announce that my quilt is FINALLY finished. So this quilt has been in the making now for 9 years. Yes that is a long time, and I have made many things since the start. Lets just say...I am not a very good finisher. I love to start things but am not so good on the finishing part...unless there is a deadline. I do deadlines very well. Usually the night before, but deadlines are good. So when my mother-in-law took the kids for a week to let me rest from being sick for a week prior, I used my time wisely and finished several things that have been waiting for my attention. My quilt being one of them. After much waiting, may I present....

And best of all, it was finished just in time for the Fourth of July.

So how could a quilt take 9 years to complete? Well that is a very good question, indeed. It all started when a good friend of mine and I went to the fabric store. Yes it has been one of my favorite places for a very long time. We came across this very fun fabric that had 2000 written all over it. Perfect we thought, we are graduates of the year 2000. What a perfect graduation quilt. Well, hers was finished within a few months, and mine sat in a box. I moved away and started college with the intentions of working on my quilt (the first large one I have made). And it still sat in a box.

Then I got married and had a baby girl. My quilt was put off once again. The perfect opportunity presented itself three years after the purchase of my fabric, when we spent several weeks in California. When we packed to go I brought along my sewing machine (did you really think I wouldn't?) and three or four projects, my quilt included. My husband was working and I had my baby, now almost a year old, and my few projects that I had brought along. With no other obligations, I set up at the kitchen table and finished all my projects except my quilt. With nothing else to do I went to my grandmother-in-law (she is a quilter) and said, "Where do I start?" And thus my quilt had begun. I enjoyed it so much that I finished the top in three days or so. Thank goodness I had a good baby. She played and played. We left California and my quilt sat in a box.

Five long years later, after another child, a move, a third child, and four more moves, my quilt made it out of the box and onto some quilting frames. A dear friend spent several hours with me tying it and it was almost done, but not quite. It sat around for another several months awaiting the final binding step. Why it took so long? I don't know. I am not a very busy person. : )

So when grandma took the kids and the Fourth of July was upon us, my quilt once again made an appearance, and this time it is finished! I have been so excited about it. It is 90 degrees outside and I am still huddled under my quilt. I think I am ready for the next one...but this time it won't take so long. What good is it sitting in a box?

My "to sew" list is shrinking...I may need a new project. It has been so fun to have a couple days to rest, relax and sew! That is pretty much all I have done for two days now. But don't forget the naps. The things I have made while the kids have been gone are going to have to wait a few days, due to lack of models. Funny how when I have the chance to sew it is always for the kids. Hardly ever for me, although I have a fabric for a new skirt just waiting to be created.

The other day I caught a sale at JoAnne's that I just couldn't pass up. All their clearance was an extra 50% off. So the boys got new Jammies and a matching pillow case. All for a dollar a yard. Call me crazy (okay I know lots already do) but that is a good deal! And they each got to pick out what they wanted. Too much fun!

Tarryn pick some out too but has chosen to make her pillowcase herself. It is a very slow process but she is doing great. Who knew a 6 year old could sew? Her jammies are waiting till she gets her pillowcase done.
Pillow cases are very fun, in my opinion. You can do whatever you want and to see how happy my kiddos can get over their pillow is even more fun. They are very easy if you want an easy project.

At our ward party last week the activities committee asked me to make a family flag to represent us. Of couse, as usual, I waited to the last minute to finish it up and have decided that a few modifications are going to happen, but overall I am pleased with it.

Stay tuned...when my models return...girly jammies with matching doll jammies, 9 year quilt project...FINALLY finished! and a cute, cute girly dress!

Lisa's Dress

I have been a very busy lady lately, but not creating as much as I would like. For some reason that gets thrown out the window first when you have a family of young children. Maybe that will change in the fall as school will start. Maybe not.

So my niece chose to be baptized this last weekend and gave me the privlaige of making her dress for her. Boy was that fun. I think the funnest part was letting her pick everything out. She chose a pattern, and of course it was white and said this is what I want. She was so beautiful in it too. Congrats Lisa and thanks for sharing your special day with me.

Babies...

These two were kind of hard for me to put together this time. I had a vision for the little shorts one and the product isn't quite what the vision was. But I think it turned out cute anyway.

Babies happen to be pretty plentiful in my life, not my own of course. It just so happens that most of them are boys and I am really craving a little girl to make a blessing dress for. So anyone out there that might need one...my creative juices are flowing with no little girl to flow for.

This was done for a wedding that a good friend was in. Don't look too close at her environment. Sewing tends to get all my attention and other things go by the wayside. I think I am okay with that too. Hope you had a great time, Lisa.
